Hashtag Business Things - Greg the Finance Intern

Greg the Finance Intern was a throwaway character from my Houseplants series, but Eevin Hartsough's Greg Voice was so ridiculous gave him, I had to turn him into an erstwhile workplace influencer.

Greg tackles (or bounces off) new topics each video. His armchair expertise covers everything from networking to party planning to revamping your resume because the job you thought you were going to get no longer exists because your company was sold off. Watch the whole series here.

Hashtag Business Things - Houseplants

HBT is a container for comedic content about the foibles and miseries of day-to-day office life. For the houseplants series I asked, "What if we replaced HR with an AI system?"

Then I drew eyes on my houseplants.

The storytelling was designed for social - episodes were written as standalone pieces, but if one watched them in episodic order, they'd see clear references and threads. Watch the whole series here.

I Want to Get Better at Parties

As an adult I've learned that once I'm around 3 or more people, I shut down. So throw me at a party and I'll do my best to eat snacks, drink too much, and disappear before anyone notices.

IWTGBAP is a comedy that explores what it would be like to hire a professional "friendship coach" to help us get better at socializing... in person... around others.

Stay

Some time after lockdowns were loosened but we were still all wearing masks -- the point of peak creative starvation, I gathered a few friends for a "pass the torch" project. Person A would make a silent, short film on Person B, who would do the same for Person C, who would close the loop and make something on Person B.

My premise: a man gets stuck at home during lockdown... but it's not his home.

I have grown attracted to your avatar

When we made this dance film, I was working a corporate job that had always been remote. I'd never met most of my coworkers and only knew them as rectangles on my computer screen. We were all just avatars slowly watching ourselves age and change in the self view. And it was all so mundane.

We go outside

An ongoing, site-specific project for andersmith that parallels the environmental studies within our live performance. Our changing environment is a major threat to the world and this series is our way of documenting, celebrating, and speaking up.

Many of these videos also pull audio samples from instructional videos from the 1950s -- the time so many people think of when they say "the good old days" and "simpler times."  See the series here.
